In Psalm chapter one, King David wrote about a ‘blessed’ man. In the dictionary, the word ‘blessed’ or beatify means ‘to make supremely happy’. Happiness is a state of well-being or contentment. If happiness came in ranks or levels, ‘blessed’ would the highest rank of well-being or contentment. Wouldn’t you like to have the highest ranking happiness?!? God wants you to be supremely happy; He wants you to be blessed. The problem is that we, as girls, look for happiness in silly things like:
- Friends
- Boys
- Appearance (hair, weight, clothes, etc.)
- Things (iPod, cell phones, text messaging, you get the idea)
These things may make you ‘happy’ but it only lasts about as long as the tickle-me Elmo version of happiness. God has something waaaay better for us. Suicide rates across the US are soaring, could it be because people are searching for their supreme happiness in all the wrong places?!
I love the wonderful words of Jesus in John 10:10, “The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.” Before you can be supremely happy you need to be 100% SURE that you are going to heaven, (I think I’m going to heaven because I’m a good person, does NOT count!). If you’re not 100% sure please check out my post titled: Heaven...how to be sure, this is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT! Jesus promises to give life and life in abundance! He wants you to enjoy life to the fullest, in Psalm 1:1, King David says that there are three things a Christian must NOT do:
1. You must NOT walk in the ‘counsel of the ungodly’
Example: One girl whispers into another girl’s ear and says, “Drake like totally thinks you’re hot…you should ask him out!”
Excuse me?! Since when does a girl ask a guy out? And anyway, this is only an open door to loads of temptations. Thousands of girls get into trouble by falling into this trap. When you need advice on anything…seek out God’s Word and/or a godly Christian leader (Pastor, Pastor’s wife, etc.)
2. You must NOT stand in the ‘way of sinners’
Example: Hanging out with the girls who wear skin-tight clothes, caked make-up, body piercings, and tattoos is probably not the best idea. Instead, look for friendships in mature Christians. (And remember, just because they say they are Christians doesn’t mean they are.)
3. You must NOT sit in the ‘seat of the scornful’
Okay, I’ll admit it, scornful is not a word we use much nowadays but it means angry. Obviously you can’t be happy and angry at once, so it makes sense that if you want to be happy then don’t be angry.
Girls have a bad habit of getting angry at one another...and more often than not, for reasons they don’t know are true or not. “Well, Kristi said that Ashley was flirting with my ex-boyfriend Drake. I am so not talking to Ash ever again!”
Anger doesn’t fix things; it makes wars.
Now that we saw what 3 things NOT to do, we shall look at what we SHOULD do:
v The supremely happy man’s ‘delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.’ (Deuteronomy 6:2-9, Joshua 1:8, Psalm 119:11, Psalm 119:105, and Luke 4:4)
Delight means great pleasure. We need to take great pleasure in God’s Word. Many people complain about having to read the scriptures because they say they can’t understand it or they don’t have the time. But if we truly delight ourselves in God’s Word, nothing will hinder us from reading it.
Careful meditation and obedience to God’s Word leads us to a life flourishing with blessings! Stop searching in empty potholes for your happiness, dust off your Bible and start living the life God intended for you!
“For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.”
-Jeremiah 29:11
